A naked man is lying flat on his back on the ground. Is he dead or sleeping and dreaming? He seems peaceful. The earth’s dry, cracked clay. The sky is enchanting; an enormous, very dark night full of sparkling silver stars. As the surface of the painting is in relief, the stars catch more light. It’s a very mineral painting. Melted metal, which fills in some of the cracks in the ground at the bottom of the painting, looks like ancient calligraphy.
Three words written on the painting: migredo, albedo, rabedo (black, white and red, the colors of alchemy) represent lead, silver and gold.
Anthanor was the oven used by alchemists to make the philosopher’s stone.
Changing lead to gold; his body is in the mud but his spirit is in the stars.
The transcendental step from earth to heaven that Kiefer captures so brilliantly is sublime.
Athanor, le nouveau décor peint au Louvre par Anselm Kiefer est vraiment irrésistible. Je l’ai visité plusieurs fois depuis son installation à l’automne 2007 et franchement, je le trouve révélateur. Une résurrection.
Un homme nu est couché sur le dos par terre. Est-il mort ou endormi? Rêve-t-il? Il a l’air paisible. La terre argileuse est sèche, craquelée. Le ciel est enchantant; une nuit sombre et énorme est remplie d’étoiles argentées étincelantes. Comme la surface est en relief, les étoiles attrapent plus de lumière. C’est une peinture très minérale. Du métal fondu qui coule dans certaines craquelures de la terre ressemble de la calligraphie antique.
Trois mots sont écrits sur la peinture: migredo, albedo, rebedo (noir, blanc, rouge, les couleurs de l’alchimie) qui représentent le plomb, l’argent et l’or. Anthanor était le four utilisé par les alchimistes pour fabriquer de la pierre philosophale.
Transformer du plomb en or; son corps est dans la boue, mais son esprit est dans les étoiles. Ce pas transcendant de la terre au ciel que Kiefer saisit brillamment est sublime.
