A ceiling decoration

The ceiling of this lovely studio apartment on the Ile St. Louis (I passed Notre Dame every time I came to work here and I just didn’t get blasé) was damaged by a leak in the upstairs apartment. I worked on about 6 panels between the false ceiling beams last April. (My mom even got to see the place.) The ceiling had been soaked; the painting came off in sheets. It was a modern decoration probably done by an artist who works on cinema sets. I had to recreate a number of panels exactly like the existing ones. I rather like this kind of job. It’s a challenge to find the right color palette, graphic design and drawing style. I fixed up the missing parts with plaster, primed and painted in the background using brushes and a natural sponge. I then traced the original drawing and reproduced it in all the panels, filling it in like it had been done originally. The apartment was being sold and my client wanted it to be perfect for the new owner. So it looked just fine and I thought, end of story.





I got a call from the new owner in August (I was literally on the beach and had a hard time being business like, cell phones can be treacherous!). There had been torrential rains in most of France last summer and this poor apartment had really suffered from water filtering in. I went to see it as soon as I got back to Paris and found that 6 other ceiling panels had been damaged plus part of a wall. (It seemed somewhat better to me that although I had to do the exact job as last year, at least I didn’t have to re-do the same panels! Also the client wasn’t the same and neither was the language we spoke, so there you go, at least something changed!)

Le plafond de ce petit pied à terre sur l’Ile St. Louis (je ne me lasserais pas de la balade très agréable du métro à cet adresse!) était abîmé par un dégâts des eaux. J’avais déjà retravaillé six entres poutres en avril dernier. (Même maman a pu voir l’appartement !) Le plafond était trempé ; la peinture partait en feuilles. C’était un décor récent, fait par un décorateur de cinéma. J’ai du recréer les panneaux à l’identique. J’aime bien ce genre de travail. C’est un défi de trouver la palette, le dessin et le style exact. J’ai remplis les parties endommagées avec de l’enduit, je les ai imprimées puis j’ai rattrapé le fond. J’ai ensuite tracé le dessin original puis je les ai reproduits comme les autres. La cliente vendais l’appartement et elle voulait que ça soit parfait. C’était nickel donc je pensais, fin d’histoire.
J’ai reçu un appel du nouveau propriétaire en août (j’étais à la plage et j’avais du mal à parler comme une professionnelle. (Les portables sont parfois traîtres.) Il y avait beaucoup de pluie cet été et ce pauvre appartement a bien souffert des infiltrations d’eau. J’ai trouvé, en rentrant de vacances, six panneaux originels abîmés plus un mur. (Incroyable ! Mais il me semblait mieux que bien qu’obliger de refaire le même travail, au moins ce n’était pas sur les mêmes panneaux ! En plus, j’ai travaillé avec le nouveau client en anglais, donc voilà, quelques petits changements de ce travail bis.
