Marble Imitation

A small entranceway of a Parisian apartment building was decorated with real marble panels on the lower part of the walls. (I think the architectural term is ‘dado’ but that’s a bit too weird for me so I’ll continue to call it the bottom part of the wall.) An electrical cabinet had been added hiding a marble panel behind it, other changes had been made with time like the green paint and also damage had been done by humidity. One panel was even taped to the base of a column with duck tape. My job was to paint false marble on the parts of the walls where the real marble was missing and also to seal the marble panel that was just taped on. (I called Henri to do that.)

It was a very civilized job. I got to sit down while I was working. I didn’t need a ladder. The people living in the building were nice and encouraging. The only small inconvenience was that it was a bit draughty.

I treated the walls that were flaky. I primed, plastered, sanded and applied a black basecoat. It was nice to have the original in front of me to copy, as it was difficult to imitate those thin, wispy veins that look like clouds. The result is clean and sober.










Imitation marbre

L’entrée d’un appartement à Paris était décorée d’un soubassement en marbre. On avait construit un placard pour cacher le panneau électrique et l’on avait refait les soubassements en peinture verte (qui n’allait pas du tout avec le décor original). Il y avait aussi une petite plaque de marbre tenue par du scotch. Mon travail consistait à faire du faux marbre sur les soubassements en peinture et aussi à re-sceller la plaque qui s’est décollée. (Henri s’est occupé de cette partie-là).

C’était un projet très civilisé. J’ai travaillé assise, quel luxe! Je n’ai pas eu besoin d’un escabeau. Les gens de l’immeuble étaient gentils et encourageants. Le seul hic était les courants d’air.

J’ai traité les murs malsains. J’ai imprimé, enduit, poncé, et j’ai appliqué une couche de fond noir. C’était sympa d’avoir l’original devant moi étant donné qu’il était difficile d’imiter les fines veines nuageuses. Le résultat est sobre et propre.
