Wisteria Wall

In a modern house in the suburbs, we (Henri and I) repainted a living room and stairwell. Luxurious vegetation was visible through large glass windows. I suggested a floral theme for my clients planned mural painting, seeing that they loved gardening. As their wisteria was hidden in a small ally on the side of the house, we decided that I would paint a more visible one on the back wall of the landing. My clients brilliantly preferred an impressionist painting style to a dry, realistic trompe l’oeil. (I was so relieved.)




I took photos of different wisteria vines and presented a sketch, a color palette and a detail of a flower. I drew in a trunk and branches with chalk directly on the wall. I then armed myself with a few large flat brushes and filled in the background with different yellow and purple pastel tones in what I hoped to be a Cezanne inspired manner. The following day I painted in the trunk and started the flowers. I kept cranking them out until exhausted and continued for two more days.






This project was conceived in a smooth harmonious way. I was very lucky that the clients liked the idea immediately. After seeing the studies I presented to them, they gave me ‘carte blanche’, for which I’m grateful.

Nous avons repeint le salon et l’escalier dans une maison en proche banlieue. A travers les portes fenêtres je regardais de la végétation luxueuse. Comme les clients avaient ce beau jardin, j’ai suggéré un thème floral pour la peinture murale que j’allais faire. Leur glycine étant peu visible, on a décidé de placer une fausse dans l’escalier. Les clients ont gentiment préféré un rendu impressionniste à un trompe-l’œil. (à mon grand soulagement !)
Après avoir pris beaucoup de photos de glycines, j’ai présenté une esquisse, une palette de couleurs et un détail d’une fleur sur papier. J’ai dessiné le tronc et les branches à la craie directement sur le mur. Puis, après avoir mélangé des tons pastel de jaune et violet, j’ai remplis le fond. Avec des spalters, j’ai essayé de donner un rendu à la Cézanne. J’ai ensuite commencé l’arbre. J’arrêtais de peindre les grappes de fleurs quand je n’en pouvais plus pour recommencer le lendemain.
Ce projet était un bonheur. L’idée est venue facilement et les clients étaient enchantés immédiatement. Ils m’ont même donné carte blanche après la présentation des études. Trop chic !
